Inflamed Bone Marrow—But Chronic Pain Subsides

Due to osteomyelitis, a chronic inflammation of the bone marrow, a 16-year-old boy had been suffering from constant pain for four years. Conventional medicine was unable to relieve him of it. But by the end of an AUSWEGE therapy camp, he was nearly pain-free. He was able to stop taking his medication.

David’s* ordeal had begun four years earlier: After he fell hard on his tailbone, he experienced constant pain in his buttocks and lower back, especially when running; all his muscles hurt when pressed or strained, especially in his upper arms and thighs. He often felt nauseous and exhausted.

The initial suspicion of a rheumatic disease was not confirmed. Rather, his persistent symptoms were caused by osteomyelitis: a chronic inflammation of the bone marrow. Antibiotics, pain killers (ibuprofen), and homeopathic remedies helped only in the short term, if at all.

Would his main symptoms— pain and fatigue—change at an AUSWEGE/WAYS OUT camp?

His mother described what the therapy week meant for her son in a thank-you letter she wrote afterward:
“Even while he was still there, David was able to stop taking pain medication,” she wrote. “And that has continued to this day, with three exceptions, during which he took one tablet each time.
At first, I wanted to wait and see if his pain would remain stable after school started, when he has to sit on a hard chair all day. But he only has pain now and then. Before, he couldn’t sit at all without pills. According to him, he’s feeling much better! He’s also become happier and more outgoing again. During the camp, it was clear to see how he was participating more in life again—he was, so to speak, ‘given back to life.’
